well more like my gf.... but anywho My gf has a 2013 tacoma. It has 20k on it and she had always taken it to jiffy lube for oil changes . she mentioned that it needed a change and i offered to do it for her instead of the "lube". she declined because she got a card from the stealership that she had free oil changes from em. They did the change and she noticed a rattle developed soon after. I said take it back and complain. she did and "everyone was out to lunch, bring it back another day." We drive my e90 to sowo so the truck is parked for the weekend. she comes back drives the truck for a few days and it starts sounding like a diesel on the way to work one day. then she sends me a pic with oil running out of the parked truck….there was no drain plug and metal shavings in the residual oil.
We go into the dealer calm and wanting to make the situation right at the dealer level...they feign concern ,give her a 2011 xb loaner (certified with broken ac...lol) and have the truck “towed” to the service dept. I say ’towed” because the tow driver STARTED and DROVE the truck onto the roll back, we have security cam footage. The dealer said they did another oil change, drove it, checked the filter and there was no shavings. There is a rattle in the cat so they are gonna fix it, but come pick it up.
Should she be pissed she isn't getting a new engine or better yet a new truck? she contacted corporate and they said we are sure the dealer did due diligence don’t worry its a toyota, it’ll be ok. if the dealer doesn’t offer at least a new engine I’m thinking of cranking up the old internet rage machine.
what do you my fellow oppos/jalops think? Are we being too uptight?

If there is metal shavings don't drive it. It needs serious help.

When you say "shavings", do you mean metal flakes like dust in the oil or actual chunks of metal? Document everything to be safe. With no oil I'd assume the shavings could be bearing surfaces (I also pulled this out of my ass). See if you're now burning any oil while driving, or check for smoke on start-up.

Agreed on don't drive it, and I would say the Jiffy Lube is responsible since the improper change and resulting damage occurred there. Of course getting them to own up/pay up is very unlikely. Keep pursuing the dealer.

That was my thoughts... the tow driver DID drive it. the dealer doesn't think it needs a new engine.

coulda been a drain plug put in with an impact wrench too, and those were the drain plug threads that were barely holding on

It's on them. They failed to secure the drain plug so the oil ran out causing the engine to shred itself. Don't drive it anymore. Talk to the service manager and no one else on the lot beside the owner. If you do not get a satisfactory outcome (engine replacement/rebuild) call corporate and explain the problem again and insist they do something about it since one of their dealerships caused this to happen. If that does not work then it is time to lawyer up.

dealer did this change. jiffy lube is where she normally went thought

Well of course the dealer says it doesn't need a new engine, that is a ton of money lost in labor and parts. Don't drive it, if you do start it or drive, then video tape everything, keep complaining to corporate, let them know it ran without the amount of oil in it that it should. And what I would do, even though it would cost a bit, take it to a trusted shop, and have them take some things apart and really check it out. Keep complaining, they fucked up so they should fix it. And make sure you complain to corporate on how the tow truck driver they hired started up your vehicle.
Don't let this rest, keep complaining.

thanks man.... incomming message

Ah ok. Then yeah, the dealer needs to make this right. Go get it examined by a couple independent shops and have their findings documented.

i wasnt present for taht part.... she said one of her coworkers wiped a napkin on the drain pan and you could clearly see metal. all i know

wasnt mine for anyone else reading.
suggested pulling mechanical oil pressure and compression tests to see if the motor is within spec.

I'm going to agree with 505Turboeaux and go with over-torqued drain plug, which probably let the oil run out. Still, make sure she (or you) document any future issues with the engine.

i wasn't around for that ... a co worker got underneath and wiped with a napkin.... she said there was clearly metal in the oil. thats all i know

UPDATE!
Took the truck back in to show that there is still metal in the oil after they "changed" the oil and filter twice. they say there is nothing there.... im about done dealing with this incompetent shop manager. time to go talk to a lawyer? our first calls to corp didn't do a damn thing. i feel kinda bad the stealership was recently sold and the new owners are walking into this blind. i would also feel slightly guilty trading the truck in and dumping it on someone else.
